100-word bio:
Genoveva Dimova is a Bulgarian fantasy author and archaeologist based in Scotland. Her debut novel, Foul Days, will be published in 2024 with Tor Books. She vehemently believes in writing what you know, so her work often features Balkan folklore, the immigrant experience, and protagonists who get into incredible messes out of pure stubbornness. When she’s not writing, she likes to explore old ruins, climb even older hills, and listen to practically ancient rock music.
1-page bio (about 300 words):
Genoveva Dimova is a fantasy author and archaeologist. She grew up in Bulgaria and now lives in Scotland with her partner and a small army of houseplants.
Foul Days is her English-language debut, coming in 2024 by Tor Books. It’s a fantasy set in a world inhabited by the monsters from Bulgarian folklore, with some Cold War inspiration thrown in, in the form of a magical Berlin-Wall-like barrier. Foul Days was selected for the Author Mentor Match program, which involved working on the manuscript with a published author—and rewriting about two thirds of it. This taught her to never write a mystery without outlining it first.
Genoveva grew up in Varna, Bulgaria, a city on the coast of the Black Sea, full of sandy beaches, great seafood, and some of the most impressive Roman ruins on the Balkans. She moved to Scotland in the autumn of 2010, after being accepted to study Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. Immigration had been a bit of a spontaneous decision and, as it turned out, there was very little that could prepare you for the gloomy Scottish autumn. However, after arming herself with a very good umbrella and buying some waterproof boots, she quickly fell in love with the Scottish beaches and hills, culture, history, and sense of humour.
After finishing her bachelor’s in Archaeology, she did a master’s degree in Material Culture and Artefact Studies. She worked as a field archaeologist for a few years, but nowadays mostly lurks in the lab and specialises in archaeobotany—the study of plants and how they impacted past societies in terms of food and drink, medicine and dyes, trade, agriculture, building, and ritual. If there ever was a career path perfect for a fantasy author, she might have just found it.
